Hearing the words “running a business” can scare people, it shouldn’t.
This doesn’t mean you’re going to need to finance offices and keep up with paying 50 staff. Running a business can be as simple as being a single self employed entity, freelancing and selling a service to a handful of recurring customers.
Let me break things down for you if you’re thinking of taking this approach to support a nomadic lifestyle.
FREELANCING
A freelancer is a self-employed person who offers services to clients, and often to multiple clients at a time.
These services are usually offered to businesses, though many freelancers can offer their services to individual consumers by signing up to websites such as those in the list on the right column.
Nearly every type of service needed by most businesses could be provided by a freelancer, including marketing, publicity, advertising, technological support, creative work, and financial support such as bookkeeping.
Here are some examples of websites to find business (not limited to)
- Upwork
- Freelancer
- Fiverr – Home Page
- People Per Hour
As a freelancer, you have some great benefits.
Such as,
- Setting your own hours
- Setting your rates of compensation
- Selecting who you work with
A FULLY FLEDGED ENTREPRENEUR
When you freelance, you’re typically exchanging time for money. Which suits the majority of people.
When you step into running a company, you’re putting yourself into a position where you may have people working for you eventually. The benefit of this is you can have other people generate income for you. This also comes with a lot of responsibility and it takes a certain type of person to be able to handle it.
When you’re running a company, you have to deal with hiring and firing, and the latter doesn’t feel good at all. You also have to take full responsibility when things go wrong, even if it was a staff member who made the mistake. You clients, don’t care who made it, it’s your company, it stops with you.
When you have people working for you, you can’t just turn your back on the business, lay on a beach, and hope for the best, you need to stay very much involved, the potential difference however, is that you can likely do what you need to do while being in more favorable locations on many occaisions.
Whereas, as a remote employee/freelancer with a certain skill, you will more than likely need to spend considerable time inside, at your computer working.
Whether freelancing, or going full entrepreneur and creating a company, there are many things you need to consider.
You have to ensure you deliver what you promise in order to keep clients happy, you have to ensure you’re charging correctly so you don’t end up with no free time and not enough money, and you also have to make sure you keep up with your obligations like paying tax.
